According to the agency, "under the scrutiny of the Chinese authorities" are caves in Yunnan province, in which bats live. AP correspondents tried to get into these caves. But they were not allowed there by the PRC state security agents.
Nevertheless, the government provides large grants to scientists who are studying the origin of the virus. Government officials are monitoring the findings of the studies and demanding approval from a special government group before publication. Particular attention is paid to the abandoned mine inhabited by bats. In 2013, they were diagnosed with the RaTG13 virus, the closest genetic relative of SARS-CoV-2.
The agency claims that Chinese experts have begun to investigate the potential primary sources of SARS-CoV-2 since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. However, the data has not yet been published anywhere.
In early December, Chinese scientists announced that the coronavirus first appeared and began to spread in India, not China.
