Journalists who studied the patent application noted that the document did not mention the fact that glass can improve the acoustic properties of the headset. "Glass can block certain sounds and let some frequencies pass," the authors said.

Apple won't be the first gadget maker on the market to use glass in audio. In particular, Sennheiser's HD 820 headphones use glass to deliver a realistic sound.
