An attempt to challenge the results of the electoral vote could be undertaken by a group of Republican lawmakers when approving the results of the presidential election in the US Congress on January 6. This was reported on Thursday, December 31, on the website of the CNN television channel.

Such a step may be taken by about 140 Trump party members in the House of Representatives and several in the Senate, two Republican congressmen explained to the TV channel.

According to the channel, the allies of the current head of state “actually have no chance to change the results” of this procedure. As noted in the material, the legislators in question are able to "only postpone for a few hours the inevitable confirmation of Biden as the winner in the electoral college and the new president."

Journalists claim that the head of the Republican majority in the US Senate, Mitch McConnell, calls on his fellow party members in the upper house not to try to challenge the presidential election results.

Trump announced this week to appear in Washington on January 6, when Congress will formally approve the electoral vote for the presidential election.

Earlier it was reported that Republican Senator Josh Hawley intends at this meeting to express an objection to the results of the electoral vote, which will briefly postpone the recognition of Joe Biden as president.

On December 28, the American leader once again called on Republican senators to fight to challenge the results of the presidential election.

According to existing rules, legislators can oppose the approval of voting results in a particular state. The objection must be filed in writing by at least one member of the House of Representatives and one member of the Senate, then the meeting of Congress will be suspended for both houses to separately consider and vote on the matter. If at least one of the chambers of the legislature speaks out against, the protest is not accepted.
